Threaded plugs

The threaded sealing plugs are one-piece elements for the purpose of sealing a bore, e.g. in hydraulic components or lubrication systems, the so-called b&m-KL Plug®. This thread plug only becomes a two-piece element during the setting process and then consists of a conical inner part with a thread in a blind hole and a sleeve. During the setting process, the tapered inner part is drawn into the sleeve, which is thereby expanded. For the setting process, a drawing tool is required with a threaded mandrel that can spin the threaded plug up and down.

Another type of thread plug is a two-part element, in which the conical inner part and the sleeve must be pre-assembled.

The youngest element of sealing plug technology

The manual work station for thread plugs shown below is designed for the thread plugs M4-M10. The setting force is selectable with 5, 19 or 31 kN, depending on the pressure intensifier. The setting stroke is 12 mm. The brushless gear motor ensures a spindle speed of 500 rpm and a spindle speed of 1000 rpm.

The setting tool is mounted vertically on a tool stand, which is equipped with a ball guide and two spring balancers to compensate for the weight. This is a tool stand with linear guides. In the control cabinet there is an electrical control unit with the Siemens logo and a controller for the gear motor.

The upper curve shows the b&m-KL Plug® when it is placed in a hole with the correct tolerance, the lower curve is created when the KL Plug is placed in air or in a too large hole.

The setting curves on the right show the reproducibility of four IO processes.

The pneumatic control is carried out via a solenoid valve for switching off the setting force when the preset value is reached at the measuring amplifier. The Digiforce 9311 measurement amplifier provides a fully-fledged process monitoring system with pressure and displacement sensor. Alternatively, the force-controlled switch-off can also be performed with an intelligent pressure sensor.

The fully automatic processing of the threaded plugs works similar to that of the rivet nuts and can be read there.
